The Psychology of Difficult Conversations
Managing resistance, disagreement and emotionally charged interactions
Some conversations are postponed for weeks: a disagreement with a colleague, a refusal, news nobody wants to hear. When they finally take place, strong emotions narrow attention, and people who feel their autonomy or standing is being challenged tend to resist the message, whatever its merits (Brehm, 1966). Understanding these reactions makes it possible to prepare for them, in others and in oneself.
